Shopify Payments takes a percentage of every sale, forever, and that percentage grows with your store. A crypto gateway removes the percentage entirely. With GriffNode you pay a flat monthly fee, the customer pays in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash or an ERC-20 stablecoin like USDT, and the money lands in a wallet only you control.
There is no GriffNode app in the Shopify App Store. Shopify does not expose a public payment-gateway API to third parties, so every crypto gateway on Shopify works the same way: a "Pay with crypto" action that hands the customer to a hosted payment page, then a webhook that marks the order paid. That is the route described below, and it works on every Shopify plan.
Shopify crypto payment options compared
How the common ways of taking crypto on a Shopify store differ on the things that actually cost you money.
| GriffNode | Hosted crypto gateways | Shopify Payments (cards) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee model | Flat monthly fee, 0% of the payment amount | Percentage of each payment, charged per transaction | Percentage of each sale plus a fixed per-transaction fee |
| Custody | Non-custodial. Payments settle to your own wallet | Usually custodial. The provider receives funds first | Custodial. Shopify holds the funds until payout |
| KYC required | No merchant KYC | Usually yes, business verification before payouts | Yes, full business and identity verification |
| Chargebacks | None. On-chain payments are final | None on the crypto leg | Yes. Card disputes and fraud reversals apply |
| Settlement | Direct to your wallet as the payment confirms | Provider payout on their schedule | Bank payout on a fixed schedule |
| Supported chains | Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash and ERC-20 tokens | Varies widely by provider | Not applicable |
| Self-hosting | No. GriffNode is hosted for you | Rarely | No |
Shopify also applies its own additional transaction fee when you use any payment method other than Shopify Payments. That fee goes to Shopify, not to your crypto gateway, and it applies whichever gateway you pick. Work the numbers for your own volume with the fee calculator.
Crypto payment gateways Shopify merchants consider
The short version of what each one is actually for.
- GriffNode: flat monthly pricing with no cut of the payment amount, non-custodial settlement to your own wallet, and no merchant KYC.
- Coinbase Commerce: a well-known brand backed by Coinbase, with an account and verification process attached.
- BitPay: an established processor built around fiat settlement and business compliance.
- NOWPayments: a broad multi-currency processor covering a very large list of coins.
- CoinGate: a European processor offering both crypto and fiat settlement options.
- BTCPay Server: free and open-source, but you run and maintain the server and the node yourself.
What it costs you at real Shopify volume
A percentage fee scales with your success, which is the problem. A flat fee does not. GriffNode is free to start with 30 transactions a month, $49/month on Business with 300 transactions, and $129/month on Professional with 1000. Go over your plan's included transactions and you pay a small per-transaction overage, $0.10 on Business and $0.07 on Professional. Never a slice of the sale.
That means a $40 order and a $4,000 order cost you exactly the same to accept. On a store doing real volume, that is the entire argument.
Which coins to switch on first
Start with Bitcoin and a stablecoin. Bitcoin is what most crypto-holding customers reach for first, and USDT or USDC removes the price-movement question for anyone nervous about volatility. Litecoin and Dogecoin are worth adding for smaller baskets because their network fees are low enough that a $15 order still makes sense.
Every coin you enable settles to an address derived from your own extended public key, so adding a coin never gives GriffNode access to anything.
How to accept crypto on Shopify with GriffNode
Roughly an afternoon, and most of it is testing.
- Get your wallet xPub. Export the extended public key from a wallet you control, such as Ledger, Trezor, Electrum or BlueWallet. GriffNode uses it to derive a fresh receiving address per order and can never spend from it. The wallet setup guide covers every wallet.
- Create your GriffNode account. Sign up free, paste your xPub, and pick the coins you want to accept. No KYC, no business documents, no waiting for approval.
- Add a "Pay with crypto" action to your store. Point it at a small server-side endpoint that calls the GriffNode API to create a payment, then redirect the customer to the hosted payment page that comes back. A serverless function is plenty. See the quick start.
- Wire up the webhook. Receive the payment event on your endpoint, verify the signature, and mark the matching Shopify order paid through the Shopify Admin API. Signature verification is covered in the webhook security docs.
- Test the whole path, then go live. Use test mode to run an order end to end without moving real money, confirm the order flips to paid, then switch to live keys.
Frequently asked questions
Can you accept crypto payments on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify has no native crypto checkout, so you connect a crypto payment gateway. The gateway creates a hosted payment page for each order and sends a webhook when the payment confirms, which marks the Shopify order as paid. This works on every Shopify plan.
Does GriffNode have a Shopify app?
No. Shopify does not open its payment gateway API to third-party providers, so GriffNode integrates through its hosted payment page, REST API and webhooks instead. A small server-side endpoint connects the two, and it works on any Shopify plan.
What does it cost to accept crypto on Shopify?
With GriffNode you pay a flat monthly fee and nothing on the payment amount. The free plan includes 30 transactions a month, Business is $49 a month for 300, and Professional is $129 a month for 1,000. Shopify charges its own additional transaction fee for any non-Shopify payment method.
Do I need KYC to accept crypto on my Shopify store?
Not with GriffNode. You create an account with an email address and connect your own wallet, with no identity or business verification required. Your own local tax and reporting obligations still apply as normal.
Where does the money go when a customer pays in crypto?
Straight to your own wallet. GriffNode derives a unique receiving address for each order from your extended public key, so the payment goes from the customer to you. GriffNode never holds, routes or has the ability to spend your funds.
Can crypto payments be charged back?
No. A confirmed on-chain payment is final and cannot be reversed by the customer or their bank. That removes card fraud disputes entirely, which is why merchants selling digital goods and high-ticket items find crypto attractive.
